When Babylon Comes for Jerusalem
Jerusalem once seemed secure, but the prophets warned that Babylon would bring the city crashing down. This map traces the Babylonian Empire and the road toward the destruction of Jerusalem, including the loss of the temple’s treasures.
Description
Babylon’s Rise and Jerusalem’s Fall
Micah warned that Jerusalem would one day be reduced to ruins because its leaders had turned away from God and abused their power. His words pointed toward a devastating future: the city would be torn down, the Temple Mount would become overgrown, and Jerusalem would lose the security its people believed God had guaranteed.
That warning became reality when the Babylonian Empire rose to power in the ancient Near East. Babylon conquered Judah, captured Jerusalem, and eventually destroyed the city and Solomon’s temple. The Babylonians carried away valuable treasures from the temple, including its gold and other sacred objects, while many people from Judah were taken into exile.
The geography helps explain how Babylon could threaten Jerusalem from so far away. The empire stretched across Mesopotamia, centered on the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, with Babylon far to the east of Judah. Major cities such as Nineveh, Damascus, and Susa help put Babylon’s growing power into perspective, while Jerusalem marks the western edge of the kingdom that would be conquered.
This map connects Micah’s prophecy with the larger political world of the ancient Near East. What began as a warning about Jerusalem’s corruption became part of a much larger story of empire, conquest, exile, and the destruction of the temple. Seeing Babylon and Jerusalem together makes the scale of that coming disaster easier to understand.
