Description

Daniel's Vision of Successive Kingdoms

In Daniel 2, King Nebuchadnezzar dreamed of a great statue made from different metals. Daniel explained that each section represented a kingdom that would rule after another. The head of gold symbolized Babylon, while later portions pointed to future empires that would rise after Babylon's decline.

History records exactly such a succession of powers. The Assyrians dominated the region before Babylon defeated them. Babylon then became the leading empire until it fell to the Medes and Persians. These dramatic shifts changed the political landscape of the ancient Near East and shaped the world in which many biblical events unfolded.

The prophecy ultimately points beyond human kingdoms to God's eternal kingdom, represented by a stone that destroys the statue and fills the whole earth.
