Zechariah’s Vision of a Changed Landscape
After the exile, the prophet Zechariah looked ahead to a time when Jerusalem would be secure and the surrounding land would be transformed. He described the hills of Judah becoming a plain, stretching from Geba north of Jerusalem all the way to Rimmon in the south.
The geography helps make the prophecy easier to picture. Jerusalem sits in the hill country west of the Dead Sea, while the Arabah runs southward for about 100 miles from the Dead Sea toward the Gulf of Aqaba. The map shows how dramatically the land drops and changes as the hills give way to the great valley.
Geba and Rimmon mark the northern and southern ends of the area mentioned by Zechariah. The Arabah lies farther east, forming a long, deep corridor between the highlands and the territory of Jordan. Jerusalem stands between these major geographic features in the rugged hill country.
For Zechariah, this wasn't simply a description of terrain. The changing landscape was part of a larger promise about Jerusalem's future. Seeing the hills, valleys, and distances on a map helps show just how sweeping his vision was—and why the geography matters when reading the prophecy.
