The Israelites had escaped Egypt, but their journey through the wilderness was far from easy. While they were camped at Rephidim, a group of Amalekites attacked them. This map follows the Israelites’ journey toward Mount Sinai and highlights the possible location of Rephidim.
Description
The Attack at Rephidim
After leaving Egypt, the Israelites traveled through the wilderness toward Mount Sinai. Along the way, they stopped at Rephidim, where they faced another serious challenge. Exodus 17:8 says that the Amalekites came and fought against Israel there.
The map traces a possible route from the Nile River Delta and Goshen through the wilderness. It passes the possible locations of the Reed Sea, Marah, and Elim before continuing toward Mount Sinai. Rephidim is marked near Mount Sinai as the place where the Amalekite attack took place.
The geography helps explain the difficulty of Israel’s journey. The route crosses dry desert terrain between Egypt and the Sinai region, with limited water and difficult conditions. The map also shows the Gulf of Suez, Gulf of Aqaba, Midian, and the surrounding wilderness.
The exact locations of several places on the Exodus route are uncertain. The question marks on the map reflect this uncertainty, including the possible locations of the Reed Sea, Shur Desert, Marah, Elim, and Rephidim. The route shown is therefore best understood as a proposed reconstruction of the journey.
The attack by Amalek became an important part of Israel’s story. Deuteronomy 25:17–18 later reminded the Israelites to remember what Amalek had done to them as they came out of Egypt.
