Daniel 8 describes a vision of a goat from the west moving so fast it seemed not to touch the ground. Many Bible readers connect that image with Alexander the Great, whose armies rapidly defeated the Persian Empire and reshaped the world of the eastern Mediterranean and Near East.
Alexander’s conquests stretched across an enormous region, from Greece and Egypt through Mesopotamia, Persia, and into parts of Central and South Asia. His empire spread Greek language, culture, and political influence across lands that would later shape the world of the New Testament.
But Alexander’s empire did not last long as one united kingdom. After his death, his generals divided the empire into rival kingdoms, including the Seleucid Empire. That later kingdom became especially important for Jewish history and for understanding the background of Daniel’s prophecies.
