Jacob Adopts His Grandsons
Near the end of his life, Jacob made an important decision about his family. Joseph brought his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, to Jacob, and Jacob adopted them as his own sons. In Genesis 48, Jacob says that Ephraim and Manasseh would be treated like his own sons, just as Reuben and Simeon were.
That decision helps explain something that can be confusing when reading the Bible. Joseph does not appear as a separate tribe in the same way as his brothers. Instead, his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, become tribal names in Israel. Together with Jacob’s other sons, they are part of the traditional list of the 12 tribes of Israel.
This map gives a geographic picture of those tribal territories. The tribes are spread throughout Canaan, with some territories west of the Jordan River and others, including East Manasseh, Gad, and Reuben, on the eastern side of the river.
