Jacob had spent years away from Canaan, but now he was on his way home. As he approached the region east of the Jordan River, he learned that Esau was coming to meet him with 400 men. Jacob was deeply concerned about the encounter, remembering the conflict between the brothers from years earlier.
Jacob camped near the Jabbok River and decided to send gifts ahead of him. He selected several herds of livestock and sent them toward Esau in separate groups, hoping the gifts would help soften his brother’s anger.
