Jacob Sends Gifts Ahead to His Brother Esau
Jacob had spent years away from Canaan, but now he was on his way home. As he approached the region east of the Jordan River, he learned that Esau was coming to meet him with 400 men. Jacob was deeply concerned about the encounter, remembering the conflict between the brothers from years earlier.
Jacob camped near the Jabbok River and decided to send gifts ahead of him. He selected several herds of livestock and sent them toward Esau in separate groups, hoping the gifts would help soften his brother’s anger. The map highlights Jacob’s camp near the Jabbok and the route taken by his messengers toward Esau in Edom.
The geography helps put Jacob’s situation into perspective. After traveling south from Paddan-Aram, Jacob had reached the region around Ramoth in Gilead and the Jabbok River. From there, the route toward Edom led farther south toward the territory associated with Esau, including the area around Mount Seir.
This moment shows Jacob trying to prepare for a difficult family reunion. The gifts were more than valuable possessions—they were part of Jacob’s attempt to make peace with his brother before the two finally met face to face.
