The World of Bible Times

A crossroads of continents

The lands of the Bible sat at the heart of the ancient world. Israel lay right in the middle — a narrow bridge between Africa, Asia, and Europe. Trade routes from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Arabia all passed through it. Armies marched the same paths that merchants and travelers took. Whoever controlled Israel controlled the crossroads.

Egypt and the empires

To the southwest stood Egypt — rich, powerful, and ancient even in Abraham’s time. Egypt’s Nile River made it the food basket of the world. To the northeast stretched the empires of Assyria, Babylon, and Persia — the superpowers that rose and fell, often dragging little Israel into their wars.

The wealth of the south

Farther south, across the Red Sea, came the treasures that kings loved. Gold from Ophir. Ivory and exotic animals from Africa. Spices, incense, and precious stones from Sheba and Yemen. The Queen of Sheba’s famous visit to Solomon came from this region — a royal trade mission wrapped in diplomacy.

The power of the north

To the north, in modern Turkey and beyond, lay the lands of the Hittites and Greeks. Chariots and horses, symbols of military strength, often came from there. These nations supplied the weapons and technology that shaped ancient wars.

A world in motion

The world of Bible times was no isolated desert. It was alive with trade, culture, and conflict — caravans on the move, ships on the sea, and empires struggling for power. The Bible’s stories unfolded in a world constantly connected, constantly changing.
