Where Solomon Met God
Before Solomon became known for his wisdom, he traveled to Gibeon, where he offered sacrifices and God appeared to him in a dream. This map helps put that famous encounter into the landscape of ancient Israel, showing how Gibeon, Jerusalem, and other important places fit together.
Description
Solomon’s Kingdom and Gibeon
After David died, Solomon became king of Israel and faced the enormous task of ruling the kingdom his father had built. One of the most important places in his early reign was Gibeon, where the main worship center was located. There, Solomon offered sacrifices, and God appeared to him in a dream. Solomon asked for wisdom so he could lead the people well, rather than asking for wealth or a long life.
The geography helps explain the setting. Gibeon was in the hill country north of Jerusalem, within the territory associated with Benjamin. Jerusalem was becoming the center of Israel's royal power, while places such as Shiloh, Shechem, and Samaria were part of the broader landscape of Israel. Farther north, Dan marked the northern end of the kingdom, while the Jezreel Valley, Gilboa Mountains, and Sea of Galilee connected the central hill country with northern Israel.
Gibeon mattered because it was an important worship center before Solomon's temple was built in Jerusalem. The map also shows how the rugged hill country shaped travel and settlement around Jerusalem and Benjamin. Seeing these places together makes Solomon's early story easier to picture—and shows how his request for wisdom began in a real place within the landscape of his kingdom.
