This map illustrates Jerusalem during the reign of King Solomon in the tenth century BC. The original City of David occupied the narrow ridge south of the Temple Mount, protected by steep valleys on three sides. It was here that David established his royal capital after capturing the city from the Jebusites.
Solomon expanded the city northward by constructing the Temple on the higher ridge known today as the Temple Mount. Although David wanted to build God's house, God chose Solomon to complete the project. The magnificent Temple became the permanent home of the Ark of the Covenant and the central place of worship for the nation of Israel.
The map also highlights the Kidron Valley, which separated Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives to the east. These natural features made the city easier to defend while providing room for future growth. Solomon's Jerusalem became the political, religious, and cultural heart of Israel, a city that would remain central to Bible history through the kingdoms, the prophets, and the life of Jesus.
