Description

The Shunammite Woman’s Journey to Elisha

The story begins in Shunem, a village near the Jezreel Valley. The Shunammite woman had previously welcomed Elisha into her home, and the prophet had promised that she would have a son. Years later, that child suddenly became ill and died. Rather than accept what had happened, she immediately set out to find Elisha on Mount Carmel.

Her journey was urgent. She traveled by donkey across the Jezreel Valley, covering about 25 miles to reach Mount Carmel. The geography helps make the story more vivid: Shunem lies near the eastern side of the valley, while Mount Carmel rises toward the Mediterranean coast to the southwest.

When Elisha saw her approaching, he sent his servant Gehazi to meet her and ask whether everything was all right. She continued on until she reached Elisha himself and reminded him of the promise surrounding her son. Elisha then returned with her to Shunem, where he prayed and the boy was restored to life.

The map highlights how determined the woman was to reach Elisha. Her long ride across the Jezreel Valley wasn't simply a change of location—it was a desperate search for the prophet she trusted. The route also shows how the hills and valleys of northern Israel shaped travel during the time of Elisha and the kings.
