Description

Saul Falls as David Rises

King Saul’s reign came to a tragic end when he and his sons were killed in battle with the Philistines on Mount Gilboa. Saul’s death left Israel divided and vulnerable, while David was already established as an important leader in Judah. The map follows the changing centers of power as Israel moved from Saul’s rule toward David’s kingship.

After Saul died, David became king over Judah and made Hebron his capital. Farther north, Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth was made king over the rest of Israel, with Mahanaim serving as his temporary capital. This created a divided kingdom, with David ruling Judah in the south while Saul’s family continued to claim authority over Israel.

The geography helps explain the political struggle. Mount Gilboa lies near the Jezreel Valley and the Jordan River Valley, making it an important location for Saul’s final battle. Mahanaim stood east of the Jordan, while Gibeon and Jerusalem were farther south in the hill country. Hebron, David’s capital, was deep in Judah’s territory and close to Bethlehem, David’s hometown.

This map brings the transition between Israel’s first king and its future king into focus. Saul’s death did not immediately make David king over all Israel. Instead, the nation went through a period of division and conflict before David eventually united the tribes under his rule.
