A Secret Mission to Find Israel's Next King
After Saul repeatedly disobeyed God, the Lord told Samuel it was time to choose another king. Samuel traveled about ten miles from his hometown of Ramah to Bethlehem, carrying a flask of olive oil. Because Saul might see the trip as an act of treason, God instructed Samuel to disguise his mission as a sacrifice.
When Samuel met Jesse's sons, he was impressed by the older brothers, but God had someone else in mind. David, the youngest son, was out tending sheep. Samuel anointed him with oil, and from that day the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Although Saul remained king for a time, God had already chosen his successor.
The geography helps explain the story's tension. Samuel traveled through the hill country of Benjamin into Judah, passing places closely connected with Saul before reaching David's hometown. Seeing Ramah, Gibeah, Jebus, and Bethlehem on the same map reveals how near the future king lived to the reigning one, setting the stage for the dramatic events that followed.
