The First Steps of Israel's Exodus
After generations of slavery in Egypt, the Israelites finally received permission to leave. Exodus says they gathered at Rameses and began their journey as a massive group of refugees, traveling first toward Succoth. Moses led them away from the land where they had lived and worked under Pharaoh's rule.
The geography of Egypt's eastern Nile Delta helps bring this story to life. Rameses was located in the fertile region of Goshen, while the route toward Succoth led east and southeast toward the wilderness. The landscape changed quickly from green farmland and waterways to the dry desert beyond Egypt's settled territory.
The exact locations of some places mentioned in the Exodus remain uncertain, which is why maps often show possible routes rather than a single proven path. Places such as Zoan, Avaris, Pithom, Succoth, and the lakes of northeastern Egypt help provide clues about the world the Israelites were leaving behind.
