Egypt Invades the Divided Kingdoms
After Solomon’s kingdom split in two, Judah and Israel became easier targets for their enemies. This map traces Pharaoh Shishak’s campaign from Egypt into the lands of Judah and Israel, showing how quickly a divided kingdom could come under attack.
Description
Shishak’s Raid on Judah and Israel
Not long after Solomon died, his kingdom divided into two nations: Judah in the south and Israel in the north. During the reign of Rehoboam, Pharaoh Shishak of Egypt marched north with a large army and attacked the fortified cities of Judah before reaching Jerusalem. The campaign is described in 1 Kings 14 and 2 Chronicles 12.
The geography helps explain the danger. Egypt could move north through the Sinai Peninsula and along the Mediterranean coast toward the heart of Judah and Israel. The map also places Shishak’s Egyptian forces in the larger world of the ancient Near East, with locations such as Cairo, Thebes, Jerusalem, and Nineveh showing how connected these kingdoms were.
Shishak captured Jerusalem and carried away the treasures of the Temple and the royal palace, including the gold shields Solomon had made. The raid was a painful reminder of how vulnerable the newly divided kingdom had become. What had once been Solomon’s powerful united kingdom was now split into rival nations facing threats from Egypt and other surrounding powers.
