Mount Ararat, located in the region of modern eastern Turkey, has long been connected with the biblical story because Genesis says Noah's ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. The map also compares Ararat with Mount Everest, showing just how dramatically Earth's highest elevations differ.
Geography adds an important perspective to the Flood story. Mount Ararat rises more than 16,000 feet above sea level, while Mount Everest reaches more than 29,000 feet. A modern jetliner cruising at around 33,000 to 39,000 feet flies above even Everest's summit, helping illustrate the enormous scale involved when Genesis describes waters covering the mountains.
