After the waters of the Flood receded, Noah and his family received a new beginning. God told them to leave the ark, bring out the animals, and fill the earth again. The survivors were stepping into a changed world with the responsibility of starting life over.
Genesis says that the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. This mountainous region lies north of Mesopotamia, near the lands of modern Turkey and Armenia. From these highlands, major river systems flow toward the fertile valleys farther south.
The geography becomes especially important as the biblical story moves forward. Between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers lay Mesopotamia, often called the land between the rivers. This fertile region became home to powerful cities and empires, including Sumer, Babylon, and Assyria.
This map connects Noah's new beginning with the geography of the ancient world that would soon become the setting for much of the Bible's history. From the mountains near Ararat to the great river valleys of Mesopotamia, humanity's story was beginning again.
