Map Description

This map traces the campaign recorded in 2 Kings 3, when King Mesha of Moab rebelled after the death of Israel's King Ahab. Israel's King Jehoram formed an alliance with King Jehoshaphat of Judah and the king of Edom to put down the revolt. Rather than attack from the north, the allied armies marched south through Edom before crossing into Moab.

The campaign was successful at first. The allies destroyed towns, ruined farmland, stopped up wells, and drove the Moabites back to their heavily fortified capital of Kir-hareseth. But when King Mesha sacrificed his eldest son on the city wall, the Israelites withdrew, bringing the invasion to an abrupt end. Moab remained independent, just as the famous Mesha Stele proudly claims.

The geography helps explain both the strategy and the outcome. The southern route caught Moab by surprise, while the rugged terrain around the Dead Sea and Kir-hareseth made the final assault difficult. This map captures one of the Bible's most unusual military campaigns and a turning point in the relationship between Israel and Moab.
