Description
The Battle at the Hot Gates
A Narrow Pass, a Giant Army
In 480 BC, King Leonidas of Sparta led a small Greek force to block the Persian invasion at a tight mountain pass called Thermopylae—“the Hot Gates.” It was the perfect place for a few to stall an army of many. And “many” is the right word: Xerxes, king of Persia, brought what was likely the largest army the world had seen.
Three Days of Courage
For three days, the Greeks held the pass. Spartans fought shoulder to shoulder with allies, pushing back wave after wave of Persian attacks. But eventually, a local traitor showed Xerxes a hidden path through the mountains. That let Persian troops circle around behind the Greeks.
The Famous Last Stand
When Leonidas realized they were surrounded, he sent most of the Greek soldiers home. He stayed with his 300 Spartans and a few hundred others who chose to die beside him. Their defeat bought precious time for the rest of Greece—time that helped lead to later victories at Salamis and Plataea.
Xerxes and the Bible Story
Ahasuerus: Same King, Different Name
Bible readers meet Xerxes under another name: Ahasuerus. It’s simply the Hebrew version of his title—like “Stephen” showing up as “Esteban” in Spanish. Most scholars agree this is the same man: the Persian king who fought the Spartans is the one who appears in the Book of Esther.
Right Time, Right King
The timeline fits. Xerxes invaded Greece in 480 BC. Not long afterward, he returned home with a bruised ego and a battered army. That’s the period when the story of Esther is usually placed.
A Different Portrait of the Same Ruler
The Bible paints him as a king who parties hard, acts first, and thinks later. Historians note that this doesn’t exactly match the powerful ruler who nearly conquered Greece. Some suggest the Esther story uses a stylized, exaggerated version of him. Still, the connection remains the most widely accepted: the king who stood against Leonidas is the same king who raised up Esther.
