Saul's Army Falls Back
In 1 Samuel 13, Jonathan struck a Philistine outpost at Geba, triggering a massive response. The Philistines assembled an overwhelming force with thousands of chariots, horsemen, and soldiers, camping at Michmash and sending raiding parties across the countryside. Faced with such a powerful enemy, many Israelites hid in caves, fled across the Jordan River, or deserted the army.
Saul tried to hold the line near Michmash and the hills around Bethel, but the geography worked against him. Deep valleys, steep ridges, and narrow mountain passes made the central hill country difficult to defend against a well-equipped army. The map traces Saul's retreat from Gibeah toward Gilgal while showing the Philistines' advance through Benjamin.
