Description

When Saul Turned Against God's Priests

While fleeing from Saul, David stopped at Nob, where the high priest Ahimelech gave him holy bread and the sword of Goliath. The priests believed they were helping one of the king's trusted servants. They had no idea David was running for his life.

When Saul learned what had happened, he accused the priests of siding with David. His own soldiers refused to kill the Lord's priests, but Doeg the Edomite carried out Saul's order. Eighty-five priests died, and Nob was destroyed. Only Abiathar escaped and fled to David, who would later become Israel's king.

The geography makes the story even more meaningful. Nob stood only a short distance from Saul's hometown of Gibeah and overlooked the site where Jerusalem and God's Temple would later stand. Seeing these locations together helps readers understand how close this tragedy unfolded to the future spiritual center of Israel and why it marked one of the lowest points of Saul's reign.
