Description

Map Description

During the reign of King Jehu, Syria’s King Hazael conquered Israel’s territory east of the Jordan River. According to 2 Kings 10:32-33, he captured Gilead, Bashan, and other eastern lands, greatly reducing Israel’s size and weakening its defenses. The northern kingdom struggled to stop the steady advance.

The map also points to an important twist in history. Hazael’s victories did not last forever. As the Assyrian Empire expanded, it weakened Syria’s power, allowing Israel under later kings to recover some of the territory that had been lost. The Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III even records King Jehu paying tribute to Assyria, showing how Israel sought protection from an even greater empire.

Geography reveals the shifting balance of power in the ancient Near East. The lands east of the Jordan served as both a shield and a battlefield, changing hands as kingdoms rose and fell. This map captures one chapter in Israel’s long struggle to survive between competing empires.
