Description

From Jerusalem to Beersheba

After Israel divided into two kingdoms, Judah remained centered around Jerusalem and the hill country. The map highlights the main settled portion of the kingdom, stretching roughly 50 miles from Jerusalem to Beersheba. While Judah’s claimed territory extended farther south, the dry Negev made much of that region difficult to live in.

Geography shaped everyday life in Judah. Most of the population lived in the hills and western foothills, where the land was more suitable for farming and settlement. Important cities such as Jerusalem, Hebron, and Beersheba helped anchor the kingdom, while towns along the western edge faced the Philistines.

The map also shows how close Judah was to its northern rival, Israel. Places such as Bethel and the border between Israel and Judah reveal how the divided kingdoms shared a narrow and strategically important landscape. Seeing Judah from Jerusalem to Beersheba helps put the biblical stories of Judah’s kings into geographical perspective.
