Judah Prepares for Attack
When Solomon’s kingdom split in two, Rehoboam suddenly had a much smaller kingdom to protect. This map shows the cities he fortified in Judah and Benjamin as he prepared for attacks from Israel and other neighboring nations.
Description
Rehoboam Fortifies Judah and Benjamin
After Solomon died, the kingdom of Israel split, leaving Rehoboam ruling Judah in the south while the northern tribes formed the kingdom of Israel. Rehoboam was left with only Judah and Benjamin, and his new kingdom was vulnerable to attack from several directions.
According to 2 Chronicles 11, Rehoboam strengthened a chain of fortified cities, especially in Benjamin and Judah. Places such as Bethel, Beth-horon, Zorah, Aijalon, Bethlehem, Tekoa, Lachish, Hebron, and other cities became part of his defensive network. The geography mattered because these cities guarded important roads and approaches into Judah from the north, west, and south.
The map also highlights the surrounding threats. The Philistines were to the west, while Egypt, Edom, and Moab could threaten Judah from other directions. Seeing the fortified cities on the landscape helps explain why Rehoboam focused so much attention on defense. His kingdom was small, surrounded by potential enemies, and still trying to survive after the dramatic split of Solomon’s kingdom.
