The Battle for Northern Canaan
Joshua 11 describes the largest military alliance Israel encountered during the conquest of Canaan. King Jabin of Hazor united rulers from cities across the north, assembling a force with horses and chariots that greatly outnumbered the Israelites. Humanly speaking, the odds were against Joshua's army.
God encouraged Joshua not to be afraid, and Israel launched a surprise attack near the waters of Merom. The coalition was defeated, and Joshua pursued the fleeing armies across northern Canaan. Hazor, the leading city of the alliance, was captured and destroyed, marking a major turning point in the conquest.
The geography helps explain the importance of the campaign. Northern Canaan included fertile valleys, major trade routes, and influential cities that controlled much of the region. Gaining control of this territory weakened organized resistance and allowed Israel to establish itself throughout much of the land.
