$10.00
Peace was finally within reach—until one act of revenge changed everything.
Abner, the commander of Israel’s army, came to make peace with David and unite the kingdom. Instead, he was lured back by Joab and murdered in cold blood, turning a hopeful moment into another chapter of bloodshed.
This map follows Abner’s journey to Hebron and explains how one assassination affected the future of David’s kingdom.
Description
When Revenge Overruled Peace
After years of civil war between David's followers and the house of Saul, Abner decided to support David as king over all Israel. He traveled from Mahanaim to Hebron to negotiate peace and promised to bring the northern tribes under David's rule. David welcomed him and sent him away safely.
But Joab, David's military commander, had not forgotten that Abner had killed his brother Asahel in battle. Without David's knowledge, Joab called Abner back to Hebron under the pretense of another meeting. There, at the city gate, Joab stabbed Abner to death in an act of personal revenge. David publicly condemned the murder, mourned Abner, and made it clear he had played no part in the killing.
The geography helps tell the story. Abner's journey from Mahanaim east of the Jordan River to Hebron in Judah represented a path toward national unity after years of division. Seeing the locations of Hebron, Jerusalem, Mahanaim, Shiloh, and the surrounding Philistine cities shows the political landscape David inherited and the challenges he faced before finally becoming king over all Israel.
