Matthew 19: The Long Walk South

By the time we reach Matthew 19, Jesus is closing out his public ministry in Sea of Galilee. Capernaum has been home base, familiar ground. Now the story turns south—and everything feels heavier. Matthew tells us Jesus “left Galilee” and began the road toward Jerusalem, knowing full well what waited there.

What’s striking is the route. Instead of skirting trouble, Jesus travels straight through Samaria, a region most Jews avoided. Samaritans and Jews shared history, Scripture, and deep resentment. Going through Samaria wasn’t illegal—but it was uncomfortable, tense, and very much not the norm. Think “socially awkward shortcut” rather than a war zone. Jesus takes it anyway.

From there, the journey bends east. Jesus crosses the Jordan River and spends time teaching in Perea, on the far side of the river. This detour matters. It fulfills prophecy, avoids premature arrest, and expands his ministry beyond Judea’s borders. Only after time there does he turn back west, eventually approaching Jerusalem from the east.

That’s when the message comes: Lazarus is dead. Jesus heads toward Bethany, just outside Jerusalem. The miracle that follows sets everything in motion. From here on out, the road leads straight to the cross.
