Walking on the Water: A Night on the Sea of Galilee
The story of Jesus walking on the water in Mark chapter 6 happens on familiar ground, but under frightening conditions. After feeding more than 5,000 people, Jesus sends his disciples ahead in a boat while he goes up into the hills to pray alone. The destination is across the Sea of Galilee, from the area near Capernaum toward Bethsaida.
As night falls, the disciples find themselves in trouble. Strong winds push against the boat, and rowing becomes exhausting. This lake is known for sudden storms caused by cold air rushing down from the surrounding hills, and even experienced fishermen could be overwhelmed. From shore, Jesus sees them struggling.
Sometime in the early morning hours, Jesus walks out onto the water toward the boat. The disciples panic. In the darkness and wind, they think they are seeing a ghost. But Jesus speaks words meant to steady them: “Take courage. It is I. Don’t be afraid.” When he climbs into the boat, the wind immediately dies down.
Mark adds a telling detail—the disciples are amazed, not because they lack faith in general, but because they still haven’t understood the earlier miracle of the loaves. This moment on the water reveals Jesus’ authority over nature and exposes how slow the disciples are to grasp who he truly is.
This 3D-style map helps place the story in its real setting, showing distances, shoreline towns, and the open water where fear turned into awe.
