Jerusalem grew dramatically during the reign of King Solomon. From the City of David to the Temple and the valleys surrounding it, this map gives a sense of how Solomon expanded the city and connected its most important landmarks.

Solomon’s Expanded Jerusalem
When David captured Jerusalem, the City of David occupied the southern part of the ridge. Later, Solomon expanded the city northward as he built the Temple and his royal palace. Jerusalem became the political and religious center of the united kingdom of Israel.
The Temple stood on the high ground north of the older City of David. Solomon's palace complex and other buildings extended the city farther along the ridge. The Millo, a large stepped or terraced structure, helped connect and strengthen the expanding city.
The geography of Jerusalem helps explain why the city developed the way it did. The City of David sat along a narrow ridge between the Kidron Valley and Hinnom Valley, while the Mount of Olives rose across the Kidron Valley to the east. The steep valleys provided natural defenses while also shaping the direction in which Jerusalem could expand.
The map's “Solomon's kilometer” gives a visual sense of the city's scale, measuring roughly three-quarters of a mile from the Temple area south toward the Hinnom Valley. Jerusalem was not a huge city by modern standards, but its location, defenses, palace, and Temple gave it enormous importance in the story of Israel's kings.
