Description

The First Victory in the Promised Land

Joshua 6 tells the story of Israel's first major victory after entering Canaan. Jericho guarded the eastern approach to the hill country, making it a strategic gateway into the Promised Land. Before advancing farther west, Joshua and the Israelites needed to secure this important city.

Rather than attacking with traditional military tactics, God instructed the Israelites to march around the city once each day for six days. On the seventh day, they marched around Jericho seven times before the priests sounded their trumpets and the people shouted. The city's walls collapsed, allowing Israel to capture Jericho and begin the conquest of Canaan.

The geography explains why Jericho was so important. Located in the Jordan Valley near the Jordan River, the city controlled key travel routes from the east into the central mountains of Canaan. Anyone entering the land from the plains of Moab would likely pass through this area.

Understanding the location of Jericho and the Jordan Valley helps readers follow the opening stages of Joshua's campaign. This map places one of the Bible's best-known stories in its real-world setting and shows why Jericho became the first major objective in Israel's conquest of the Promised Land.
