Map Description

This map follows Jehu's journey from Ramoth-gilead to Jezreel in 2 Kings 9. After receiving God's commission to become king, Jehu drove his chariot across the Jordan Valley toward Jezreel, where King Joram of Israel was recovering from wounds suffered in battle against the Arameans. King Ahaziah of Judah happened to be visiting Joram when Jehu arrived.

Outside the city, Jehu confronted both kings. He killed Joram with an arrow and mortally wounded Ahaziah as he fled. Jehu then entered Jezreel, where Queen Jezebel defiantly looked down from a palace window. At Jehu's command, her own servants threw her down, fulfilling Elijah's prophecy that dogs would consume her body. Jehu continued his campaign by eliminating the remaining descendants of Ahab and ending one of Israel's most corrupt dynasties.

The geography helps explain the speed and significance of these events. Jezreel stood at the eastern edge of the fertile Jezreel Valley, controlling important routes between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean coast. Its royal palace made it a strategic center for Israel's kings, and it became the place where God's judgment on Ahab's family unfolded exactly as the prophets had foretold.
