Jacob’s Journey to Bethel and Paddan-Aram
Jacob was leaving his family’s home in Beersheba and traveling north toward Paddan-Aram, where he would find a wife from his mother’s family. After traveling for some time, Jacob stopped for the night at a place called Luz, later known as Bethel. There, he used a stone as a pillow and fell asleep.
During the night, Jacob dreamed of a stairway or ladder that reached from the ground into heaven. Angels were going up and down the stairway, and the Lord stood above it. God repeated the promise made to Abraham and Isaac, assuring Jacob that his family would receive the land and that his descendants would become numerous.
The geography helps put Jacob’s journey into perspective. The map traces the long route from Beersheba in the southern part of Canaan toward Haran in Paddan-Aram, a journey of about 550 miles. Bethel sits in the hill country north of Jerusalem, making it an important stopping point along Jacob’s route.
Jacob’s experience at Bethel becomes an important moment in his story. What begins as an overnight stop on a difficult journey becomes a place where Jacob encounters God and receives a renewed promise about his family and the land.
