Jacob’s Caravan Travels to Shechem
After Jacob’s reunion with Esau, he and his family continued their journey through the land east of the Jordan River. Jacob first settled at Succoth, where he built shelters for his livestock. Later, he moved westward toward Canaan and traveled to the area of Shechem.
The map traces a possible route of Jacob’s caravan from Succoth, near the Jabbok River, to Shechem, also known as Nablus. The route winds around the hills and crosses the Jordan River Valley before reaching the central highlands of Canaan. Along the way, it passes near the Jezreel Valley, the valley of Armageddon, and the ancient settlement of Sebaste.
Geography helps explain why Jacob’s journey was not a straight walk across the land. The hills, valleys, and rugged terrain shaped the routes available to a large caravan traveling with families, servants, and livestock. The journey from Succoth to Shechem covered about 60 miles, or 95 kilometers, following a possible route around the hills.
Jacob’s arrival in Shechem marks another important step in his return to Canaan. After years of traveling, Jacob and his household were settling once again in the land promised to his family. The journey also brings him into the central region of Canaan, where several important events in his family’s story would unfold.
