Jacob Returns from Paddan-Aram to Canaan
Jacob spent many years living in Paddan-Aram, where he married, raised his children, and built up his household. When the time came to return home, Jacob gathered his family and possessions and began the long journey south and west toward Canaan.
The map traces Jacob’s route from Haran through Paddan-Aram and south toward Canaan. Along the way, the route passes near Carchemish, Aleppo, Hamat, Damascus, Ramoth in Gilead, and the Jabbok River before reaching places such as Shechem, Bethel, Jerusalem, Hebron, and Beersheba.
Geography helps put Jacob’s journey into perspective. The distance between Haran and the land of Canaan was hundreds of miles, and the route crossed a variety of landscapes, including the Euphrates River region, the Jordan Valley, and the dry Negev badlands. The map also identifies Edom, the region associated with Jacob’s brother Esau.
Jacob’s return marks an important transition in the story of Israel’s founding family. After years away, he is once again traveling through the land connected to his father Isaac and grandfather Abraham, moving toward the place where his family had lived before him.
