Jacob Moves from Shechem to Bethel
Jacob and his family had settled near Shechem after returning to Canaan. But after Shechem’s prince assaulted Jacob’s daughter Dinah and her brothers responded by killing the city’s men, Jacob’s household was in a dangerous situation. God then told Jacob to move to Bethel and live there.
The map traces Jacob’s route from Shechem, also known as Nablus, south toward Bethel. The journey follows a winding caravan route through the central hills of Canaan and covers about 25 miles, or 40 kilometers. Other locations shown include Jericho, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, and Beersheba, along with the Jordan River Valley and the Jabbok River farther east.
Geography helps show why even a relatively short journey could take time for a large household. Jacob was traveling with wives, children, servants, and livestock through the rugged terrain of the Canaanite highlands. Bethel was also significant because Jacob had previously encountered God there while traveling to Paddan-Aram.
Jacob’s move to Bethel marks a turning point after the crisis at Shechem. The journey takes his family away from the immediate danger and back to a place connected with Jacob’s earlier encounter with God. There, Jacob would build an altar and worship God as his family continued its journey through Canaan.
