Jabesh-Gilead Honors King Saul with a Courageous Rescue
$10.00
Even after Saul’s death, one city refused to forget what he had done for them.
When the Philistines displayed Saul’s body as a trophy of war, the brave men of Jabesh-Gilead risked their lives to give Israel’s first king an honorable burial. Their nighttime mission became one of the Bible’s greatest acts of gratitude and loyalty.
This map follows the journey from Beth-shan to Jabesh-Gilead, showing how geography shaped this remarkable rescue.
Description
The Final Honor Given to Israel's First King
Years before he became king, Saul rescued the people of Jabesh-Gilead from an Ammonite siege. The people never forgot his courage. After Saul and his sons died at the Battle of Mount Gilboa, the Philistines fastened their bodies to the walls of nearby Beth-shan to celebrate their victory.
When the men of Jabesh-Gilead heard what had happened, they set out on a dangerous overnight journey. They crossed the Jordan Valley, removed the bodies from Beth-shan under cover of darkness, and carried them back home. There they buried Saul and his sons beneath a tamarisk tree and mourned them with seven days of fasting.
The geography highlights both the danger and the devotion of this mission. The route from Jabesh-Gilead to Beth-shan crossed the Jordan Valley and entered Philistine-controlled territory near the battlefield. Seeing these locations together helps readers appreciate why the rescue required courage and why the people of Jabesh-Gilead remained forever grateful to the king who had once saved them.
