Map Description
This map highlights the neighboring kingdoms of Israel, Judah, and Aram (Syria) during the ninth century BC. Israel occupied the central hill country with Samaria as its capital, while Judah ruled from Jerusalem to the south. To the northeast, Syria’s capital at Damascus became Israel’s greatest military rival during much of Elisha’s ministry.
Many of the events recorded in 2 Kings took place across these lands. Syrian armies invaded Israel several times, Elisha performed miracles in cities throughout the region, and both kingdoms experienced victories and defeats as they alternately trusted or ignored God’s guidance. The political boundaries changed often, but God’s message through his prophet remained constant.
The geography explains why these kingdoms repeatedly clashed. Major trade routes crossed the Jordan Valley and the Jezreel Valley, while fortified cities guarded mountain passes and river crossings. This map provides a clear overview of the landscape that shaped many of the Bible’s most dramatic stories during the era of Elisha.
