Description

Asa and the Battle for Ramah

After Solomon’s kingdom split, Judah and Israel remained bitter rivals. During Asa’s reign, Israel’s King Baasha fortified Ramah to block people from traveling between the northern and southern kingdoms. Ramah was strategically important because it sat close to Jerusalem and controlled a major route through the hill country. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Asa responded by sending gold and silver from Jerusalem’s Temple and royal treasuries to Ben-hadad, king of Syria in Damascus. He asked Syria to break its agreement with Israel and attack Baasha from the north. Ben-hadad agreed and captured towns including Ijon, Dan, and Abel-maim in northern Israel. Baasha abandoned Ramah and returned to his capital at Tirzah. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

With Ramah abandoned, Asa recruited people throughout Judah to carry away the stones and timber Baasha had gathered for his fortress. Asa used those materials to strengthen the nearby towns of Geba and Mizpah. The map makes the geography clear: Ramah was only about 5 miles from Jerusalem, while Geba and Mizpah were close enough to become important defensive positions along Judah’s northern border. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
