Hezekiah’s Miraculous Sign

King Hezekiah became seriously ill and was told by the prophet Isaiah that he was going to die. Hezekiah prayed and wept before God, asking for mercy. God heard his prayer and promised to give him more years of life. As confirmation, Isaiah offered Hezekiah a choice: should the shadow on the stairway move forward or backward 10 steps?

Hezekiah chose the harder sign—the shadow moving backward. According to 2 Kings 20, Isaiah prayed, and the shadow went backward 10 steps on the stairway built by King Ahaz. The event became a remarkable sign that God had heard Hezekiah and would keep his promise to heal him.

The geography and architecture matter because the biblical account connects the miracle to a specific feature in Jerusalem: the staircase associated with Ahaz. A stairway exposed to sunlight could function as a simple way of tracking the changing position of the sun's shadow, making the movement of the shadow easy to observe.

For Hezekiah, the sign was more than a measurement of time. It was evidence that God controlled what seemed impossible and that the king's life was in God's hands. The story also fits the larger biblical account of Hezekiah's reign, when Jerusalem faced powerful enemies and the king depended on God's protection.
