After freeing Israel from Egypt, God gave Moses detailed instructions for a special tent where the Israelites could worship and meet with him. The tabernacle traveled with them through the wilderness, giving this wandering nation a central place to worship God.

The Tabernacle at the Center of Israel’s Camp
When the Israelites left Egypt, they became a nation on the move. During their years in the wilderness, God instructed Moses to build the tabernacle, a portable worship center that could be taken down and carried whenever the people traveled. The tent stood at the heart of Israel’s camp and was surrounded by a courtyard enclosed with curtains.
The tabernacle was divided into two main rooms: the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. The Most Holy Place was the most sacred part of the tent and contained the Ark of the Covenant. Only the high priest could enter it, and only on the Day of Atonement.
Outside the tent stood the sacrificial altar, where offerings were presented to God. The priests served at the tabernacle, following the instructions God had given Moses. Every part of the worship center had a purpose, from the courtyard and altar to the sacred rooms inside.
The tabernacle mattered because it reminded the Israelites that God was with them as they traveled toward the Promised Land. Instead of leaving worship behind when they moved from place to place, they carried their worship center with them. The tabernacle became a visible symbol of God's presence in the middle of Israel's wilderness journey.
