Hagar’s Journey into the Wilderness
Hagar was Sarai’s Egyptian servant, and after she became pregnant with Abram’s child, conflict grew between the two women. Sarai mistreated Hagar, so Hagar fled from the household and headed south into the wilderness. The map traces her possible journey from Hebron toward the Kadesh Oasis, a distance of about 70 miles.
The geography helps explain the difficulty of Hagar’s escape. Leaving the hill country of Canaan meant traveling through the dry Negev Badlands and toward the Wilderness of Shur and the Wilderness of Paran. Kadesh was an important oasis in this harsh region, providing water for travelers crossing the wilderness.
While Hagar was in the wilderness, the angel of the LORD found her and asked where she had come from and where she was going. He told her to return to Sarai and promised that her son would become the father of a great people. Hagar gave birth to Ishmael, Abram’s first child.
Hagar’s story connects the landscapes of Canaan, Egypt, and the Sinai wilderness with one of the Bible’s earliest family struggles. The map helps readers picture the distance Hagar traveled and the harsh environment where she encountered God. Her journey shows that even someone who had been pushed away and left vulnerable was seen and heard by God.
