Hagar’s Journey from Hebron to Beersheba
After Sarah asked Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away, Abraham gave Hagar food and water and sent them on their way. Hagar wandered into the wilderness, carrying her young son with her. Genesis 21 places their journey in the area around Beersheba, in the southern part of Canaan.
The map shows Abraham’s camp near Hebron and a possible route south toward Beersheba. The distance between the two places is about 25 miles, or 40 kilometers, a journey that could take roughly two days on foot. The landscape becomes increasingly dry and rugged as the route moves toward the Negev badlands.
Eventually, Hagar’s water ran out. She placed Ishmael under a bush and moved away because she could not bear to watch him die. But God heard the boy crying and an angel of God called to Hagar. God then showed her a well, providing the water they desperately needed.
The geography makes Hagar’s situation easier to picture. She was not simply walking away from Abraham’s household—she was entering a harsh wilderness where water was scarce and travel was difficult. The story also emphasizes that God saw Hagar and Ishmael in a place where they seemed completely alone and provided for them in their time of need.
