Hagar’s Journey from Hebron to Kadesh
Hagar was Sarai’s Egyptian slave, and after she became pregnant with Abraham’s child, tension grew between the two women. Sarai treated Hagar harshly, so Hagar left the household and fled into the wilderness. She traveled south from the area around Hebron, heading toward the dry lands beyond Canaan.
The geography helps explain how difficult Hagar’s journey would have been. The route from Hebron toward Kadesh crossed increasingly dry and rugged country, with the Negev and surrounding wilderness offering little water or shelter. The map highlights the Kadesh Oasis as a place where a traveler could find an important source of water.
While Hagar was near a spring in the wilderness, the angel of the LORD found her and asked where she had come from and where she was going. Hagar was told to return to Sarai and was given a remarkable promise about the son she was carrying, Ishmael.
Hagar’s journey is an important part of Abraham’s family story. It shows that even in the middle of conflict, hardship, and a seemingly empty wilderness, God saw Hagar and spoke to her. The landscape makes her story feel more real by showing the long and difficult road she traveled after leaving Abraham’s household.
