Hagar and Ishmael’s Journey into the Wilderness
When Isaac was weaned, Sarah saw Ishmael, Hagar’s son, and wanted Abraham to send them away. Abraham was troubled by the request, but God told him to listen to Sarah and assured him that Ishmael would also become the father of a nation. Abraham gave Hagar supplies and sent her and Ishmael away.
The map places their departure near Beersheba in southern Canaan and traces their movement toward the wilderness. The region south of Canaan was dry and rugged, with the Negev Badlands, Wilderness of Shur, and Wilderness of Paran stretching toward the Sinai Peninsula. For travelers on foot, finding water was essential for survival.
Hagar eventually ran out of water and placed Ishmael under a bush because she could not bear to watch him die. God heard the boy crying, and an angel of God called to Hagar. God opened her eyes to a well, providing the water they needed and promising that Ishmael would become a great nation.
The geography makes the emotional weight of this story easier to understand. Hagar and Ishmael were not simply sent away from Abraham’s camp—they were entering a vast wilderness where food and water could quickly become scarce. Their journey shows how God provided for them even after they had been separated from Abraham’s household.
