Solomon Expands Jerusalem Beyond the City of David
Jerusalem began as a fortified hilltop city, but it grew dramatically after King David made it the capital of Israel. David established his royal center in the City of David, located on the narrow ridge south of the future Temple area.
Solomon continued transforming Jerusalem. He built the Temple as Israel's central place of worship and expanded the city northward to include the growing royal and religious center. Jerusalem became the heart of the kingdom, where the king ruled and where Israelites came to worship God.
The geography of Jerusalem shaped the city's development. The steep Kidron Valley protected the eastern side, while the Hinnom Valley formed a natural boundary to the south and west. The City of David occupied a defensible ridge, and the higher ground to the north provided space for the Temple complex and later expansion.
Understanding Greater Jerusalem helps explain why Solomon's building projects were so important. He was not simply constructing impressive buildings. He was reshaping Israel's capital into a city centered on both royal power and worship, creating a Jerusalem that would remain one of the most important places in the Bible.
