Abraham, Sodom, and the Journey Through the Jordan Valley
Abraham was camped near Hebron when the LORD came to him and revealed that the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah had become great. The story in Genesis 18 begins with God visiting Abraham and then turning toward the cities of the Jordan Valley to investigate what was happening there.
The map highlights the dramatic journey from Hebron toward Sodom. Hebron sits high in the Judean hill country, while the Dead Sea lies roughly 1,410 feet below sea level. The steep descent from the mountains into the Jordan River Valley created a very different landscape from the one surrounding Abraham’s camp.
Sodom and Gomorrah were located near the southern end of the Dead Sea, although their exact locations remain uncertain. The map identifies possible locations at Bab edh-Dhra and Numeira, near the Dead Sea's evaporation pools. These sites have been investigated by archaeologists, but there is no universal agreement that either one is biblical Sodom or Gomorrah.
The geography adds important context to the story that follows. Abraham remained near Hebron and pleaded with God to spare the righteous people in the cities. The journey from the highlands down into the Dead Sea region helps readers visualize the separation between Abraham's home and the cities facing judgment.
