End of Saul's Dynasty: Ishbosheth Murdered at Mahanaim Map

$10.00

The house of Saul doesn’t end on the battlefield—it ends with betrayal in a bedroom.

After King Saul dies, his son Ishbosheth rules Israel from a temporary capital east of the Jordan River while David reigns over Judah from Hebron. But instead of a dramatic battle deciding Israel’s future, two of Ishbosheth’s own officers murder him as he sleeps and carry his head on a three-day journey to David, expecting a reward. Instead, David orders their execution, refusing to gain the throne through murder.

Description

From civil war to one united kingdom

This map follows the final collapse of Saul's royal family in 2 Samuel 4. Ishbosheth ruled from Mahanaim after the Philistines drove Israel's leaders east of the Jordan following Saul's death on Mount Gilboa. When his assassins traveled about 65 miles (105 km) from Mahanaim to Hebron with proof of their crime, they expected David to celebrate. David did the opposite. Just as he punished the man who falsely claimed to have killed Saul, he executed Ishbosheth's murderers for killing an innocent man in his own home.

The geography highlights the political divide of the time. David ruled Judah from Hebron in the south, while Saul's remaining kingdom survived east of the Jordan at Mahanaim. With Ishbosheth gone, the last serious obstacle to a united Israel disappeared. Soon afterward, Israel's tribes came to Hebron and crowned David king over the entire nation, beginning a new chapter in Israel's history.
