Story Behind the Map
Elijah first appeared with a startling message for King Ahab: there would be no rain until God said so. After delivering the prophecy, God told Elijah to hide by the Brook Kerith, east of the Jordan River. There, ravens brought him food each morning and evening while he drank from the stream. When the drought dried up the brook, God sent Elijah north to the Phoenician town of Zarephath.
This map follows Elijah's route from his homeland in Gilead to the Mediterranean coast. In Zarephath, he met a widow gathering sticks for what she believed would be her family's final meal. Instead, God miraculously kept her flour jar and olive oil from running out throughout the famine. Later, when her son died, Elijah prayed and God restored the boy to life—the Bible's first recorded resurrection miracle.
The geography makes the story even more meaningful. Elijah left Israel and entered Phoenician territory, the homeland of Queen Jezebel, whose promotion of Baal worship had helped bring the nation into spiritual crisis. By performing miracles there, God demonstrated that he—not Baal, the supposed storm and fertility god—ruled over rain, food, life, and death everywhere, not just within Israel's borders.
