Bulls held an important place in ancient Egyptian religion. The Apis bull was associated with the Egyptian god Ptah and was worshiped as a sacred animal, especially in the Memphis area. Egyptians believed that a specially chosen bull could serve as a living representation of the divine.
That religious world provides important background for the Bible’s stories set in Egypt. Joseph lived and worked in Egypt during the time of the patriarchs, when Egyptian culture, religion, and royal power were unlike anything he had known in Canaan.
The pyramids in the background place the image firmly in the landscape of ancient Egypt. The great pyramid complex at Giza stood near Memphis, one of the most important religious and political centers in the country. The Nile River and its fertile valley supported the cities, temples, farms, and massive building projects that made Egypt one of the ancient world's great civilizations.
